Dr. Dan Puccio

Dan Puccio teaches woodwinds and piano at Desert Ridge Music Academy. Dan is a saxophonist comfortable in multiple genres, and has performed with several notable artists including the Temptations, the Four Tops, Chris Potter, Dave Holland, Jerry Lewis, and Bernard Purdie. An active proponent of new music, he has commissioned and premiered over twenty new works for the saxophone in various contexts. He has performed in many notable venues throughout the Midwest and New York State including Electronic Music Midwest, the Midwest Composer’s Symposium, the SEAMUS national conference, Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, and the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival.

 

Dr. Puccio has been an active collaborator in many mixed media genres, and is the founder of the Positivity Project—a series of mixed media collaborations using music, live video and dance. Additionally, many of his compositions have been performed in New York State and the Midwest. In April 2007, the LOL All-Stars gave the premier of his Jazz Mass: a seven movement setting of the ELW Liturgy, commissioned by the Univeristy of Michigan Lutheran Campus Ministry. The fall of 2009 saw the premier for the musical score of “Bone Portraits”, incidental music and underscore for the critically acclaimed play of the same title, and in 2010, he was commissioned by the West Texas A&M Dance Department to write “Papa’s Farm”, a four movement dance suite commemorating the department’s centennial anniversary.

 

A research trip in 2010 took him to Cuba, where he studied the role of the saxophone in Cuban music, and performed with numerous Cuban ensembles, including Palmas y Cañes.

 

As an educator, Dr. Puccio has served as a Faculty Instructor of Saxophone at the Interlochen Arts Camp, and has also served as a clinician for the University of Michigan Jazz Festival, and the Highland Jazz Festival and the Crystal City Jazz Festival in Corning, NY. He has also been a featured guest artist and clinician with the University of Richmond’s Cuban music ensemble. Dr Puccio holds degrees in Improvisation, Music Education, and Saxophone Performance from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, the University of Michigan, and Arizona State University. Dr. Puccio is currently the director of Sound and Recording at the Arizona State University School of Music, and is the instructor of Woodwinds and Early Jazz with the Sun Devil Marching Band. Additionally, he maintains an extensive performing schedule throughout the Phoenix area, and is on the teaching faculty at Desert Ridge Music Adacemy.
